New SPS Work Area

SPS technicians working in the new space

One of the most crucial yet unsung services at most medical centers is their Sterile Processing Service or SPS. These staff members are tasked with the retrieval, decontamination, and sterilization of reusable medical equipment. Now, this isn’t exactly like doing the dishes. These technicians are required to follow a strict protocol for prepping, transporting, cleaning, sterilizing, and packaging the products. Stainless steel instruments require a completely different procedure compared to a urological endoscope. SPS is also one of the most audited services on station with multiple surveys each year. Joint Commission, Ohio Department of Health, and National SPS audits just to name a few.

These “behind the scene” professionals took possession of their new workspace this year. The new SPS area is located behind building 31, adjacent to Radiology. The old SPS work area was located in the basement of 24 with around 1,600 square feet of workspace. The new area is around 7,000 square feet. The new space features steam and plasma sterilizers, reverse osmosis water filters, ultrasonic cleaners, and a track system washer. Staff members have their own prep table for assembling trays and each prep table features a lighting system, magnification lenses, and PC for referencing SOPs. The staff also have dedicated space for applying/removing their Personal Protective Equipment ensuring the integrity of the work area. The flow of products coming into and out of SPS has been greatly improved.
