Basic Eligibility for VA Health Care

If you served in the active military, naval or air service and are separated under any condition other than dishonorable, you may qualify for VA health care benefits. Current and former members of the Reserves or National Guard who were called to active duty (other than for training only) by a federal order and completed the full period for which they were called or ordered to active duty also may be eligible for VA health care.

Minimum Duty Requirements

Most Veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered active duty after October 16, 1981, must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty to be eligible. This minimum duty requirement may not apply to Veterans who were discharged for a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, were discharged for a hardship or received an “early out.” Since there are a number of other exceptions to the minimum duty requirements, VA encourages all Veterans to apply to determine their enrollment eligibility.

Additional Considerations for VHA Eligibility

  • Boots on ground Vietnam – If Veteran had boots on ground during the Vietnam
  • Ship in Vietnam – If Veteran was assigned to a ship in Vietnam that could make them eligible for VA healthcare if their ship is on the ship list.
  • Camp Lejeune – Aug 1, 1953 – December 31, 1987 if you were at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days you could be eligible for VA Healthcare.
  • Southwest Asia – Gulf War Veterans if you served in the Southwest Asia theatre of operations from August 2, 1990 – November 11, 1998
  • Iraq/Afghanistan – Served in a theater of combat operations after November 11, 1998 and discharged or released from active service on or after January 29, 2003 and didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge. You have five years from date of discharge to enroll. Otherwise your eligibility is determined on income. Its only free for conditions related to your service in Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), or Operation New Dawn (OND)
  • Purple Heart Recipient – If you received a Purple Heart you are automatically eligible for VA Healthcare.
  • Service Connected – If you have received a service connection rating of 10% or higher you are eligible of VA Healthcare. If you are rated at 0% you can receive care for the service-connected condition only (or you must be below the income threshold)
  • Military Sexual Trauma - If you’re a Veteran who has experienced MST, you can get help through VA. You don’t need to have a service-connected disability rating, and you may be able to get MST-related care even if you don’t qualify for other VA services. You also don’t need to have reported the MST or have other proof that it happened.
  • Psychosis - Eligibility for treatment of psychosis, and such condition is exempted from copayments for any Veteran who served in the United States active duty military, naval, or air service and developed such psychosis within two years after discharge or release from the active military duty, naval or air service; and before the following date associated with the war or conflict in which the Veteran served:
